Bert Kaulen, a family member of the World Series of Golf, wrote us a note about his 2008 WSG experience. Though Bert didn’t make it out of day 1, you wouldn’t have known it if you met him on day 3. This guy and his friends seemed to have enjoyed every aspect the World Series of Golf has to offer. Here’s a note he sent us the other day (with some picts):
Losing $10k with a smile.
The world series of golf was the most fun I have had in Las Vegas, and I am no stranger to that wonderfully sinful city. The WSG is a first class experience from the second you land at McCarran airport to the closing party at the Mirage. I showed up at the 2008 World Series of Golf and was treated like royalty. There were car services waiting for me and my party, VIP check in at the mirage, enough swag and free stuff in the players lounge to almost off set the cost of the trip. I would even venture to guess that the WSG lost money in free Grey Goose, after my early departure out of the tournament leaving my entourage and I free to drink to our hearts content.
The Paiute Golf Course is beautiful and demanding but not impossible, which helps a guy like myself feel like I had a chance to take home the big prize money. The format is amazing in its attempt to level the playing field, and allow 36 handicappers to be able to compete with the low handicappers out there. On the first day you play against like handicaps and if you play up to par you get by the first day and win $10k. One good day of golf and you can be on a full RFB comp in Vegas free rolling for over $400k in prize money.
I’m like most of the guys who played in year two; I saw the WSG on TV and was like, I can beat those guys. I can speak from personal experience that a three footer for par at the WSG to tie the hole and chop the pot, felt more like trying to putt a golf ball down a marble floor with nothing more than a pin size hole to stop it. I have played high stakes golf for serious cash, but you add poker pros and celebrities in your group, TV crews and what feels like a million people watching things are put into a different perspective.
I cannot say enough how much fun my friends and family had coming to watch me play in the WSG. The only bad thing I could ever say about the WSG is that I have to wait until next year to play in it again. Thank you so much for putting on such a wonderful golf tournament and making me feel like a movie star for at least a few days.
Bert, for all of us at the World Series of Golf, “You’re welcome!” And we can’t wait to see you next year. I’ll be sure to order my Goose!
Here are a few picts from Bert at this years event:

I just received this email from Bill Spencer. Bill was a finalist in this years World Series of Golf event held in May out in sunny Las Vegas. You may have seen Bill on CBS Sports this past June during out telecast. Click here to see a video from our telecast (video is at bottom of page, be sure to check out the new WSG Online game as well). Here is a great little story he shared about the event.
OK, a quick funny story (at least it was to Blair Rodman and I). During the last round on Sunday (I believe it was hole #14), Eric, AJ and I had just finished teeing off when Dana asked if we could give her a ride down the fairway? So Blair and I say “sure jump on the back of the cart” not thinking much of it. Well as we were driving down the fairway looking for my golf ball someone yelled “here it is”. It had apparently gone through the fairway into the desert, so as I was driving the cart and forgetting that Dana was hanging onto the cart I made a sharp left hand turn toward the gentleman who had located my ball. Needless to say the next thing I heard was a scream and as Blair and I look back there goes Dana flying off the cart onto the fairway! Fortunately she did a perfect tuck and roll and landed on her feet. A little bruised and embarrassed she looked at the cameraman who was following our group and said “please don’t show that on TV” meanwhile Blair and I were chuckling to ourselves in the cart.
As for the entertainment and the way we were treated it was awesome!! Can’t wait to do it again next year.
Bill
Here’s a picture of Bill and Dana (his fiance) at Carnoustie, Scotland.
Bill, thanks for sharing, good times (well, maybe not for Dana)! It’s good to know she can take a fall, and we’re very happy she didn’t get hurt!
If you have any stories from your World Series of Golf experience, please shoot me an email and we’ll see about putting it online (jallen@worldseriesofgolf.com).

I noticed a few friends of the World Series of Golf are still alive at this years WSOP.
Rhett Butler (above right), who was a finalist in the inaugural event (2007) is still in it with 54,700 in chips. Allen Cunnigham, who was one of our 5 finalists this year, has 126,000 in chips.
One other poker player I’d like to mention. Chuck Norris. Basically because he’s Chuck Norris. Good Luck Chuck, and remember if you have five dollars and Chuck Norris has five dollars, Chuck Norris has more money than you. (click the link, trust me!) Chuck is going into today with 77,100 in chips.
Good luck to all today at the WSOP.
