Year one of the WSG involved a guy named Russell Warye. And we’ve yet to rid ourselves of him, nor would we want to. Russell is a great guy and a big part of the WSG family. Russell does come to many a Get Acquainted event prior to each years events, though he often sleeps right through them.
The last two years Russell has brought with him his Caddie/Financial Advisor Sally. They have made it further along the tournament each year. This year Russ got to day 2 and created quite a ruckus with his new found fan club “Warye’s Warriors” (when I get those picts, I’ll be posting ‘em – anybody have any?).
The 2009 FullTiltPoker.net World Series of Golf brought many new players (we had a field of 125 players). Four of them were part of the “Chicago 4″ (this name I made up because they were from Chicago and there were four of them, if you have a better name, shoot me an email jallen@worldseriesofgolf.com). Russell had with him second year player Bert Kaulen as well as new comers Joel Akroush and Musa Mohammed. Below is a picture of Bert (right) and friends Allison, Mike, Matt and Jon.
More info on the “Chicago 4″ to come. Above is a picture from the Opening Night White party at the Mirage Dolphin Habitat & Secret Garden.

The Virtual U.S. Open Qualifying Round: May 25 – June 21
The countdown has begun for the Virtual U.S. Open Championship. We here at WGT have had the pleasure of playing the full 18 holes and let us speak from experience, Bethpage Black is the REAL DEAL. Its slick greens, narrow fairways and gape-inducing scenery will make for an amazing test for all golfers, virtual and otherwise. The US Open players have their work cut out for them on the real Bethpage Black, and so do the rest of us on the virtual Bethpage Black.
The Virtual U.S. Open Qualifying Round begins on May 25 and ends June 21. Players from all over the world will be competing in an “unlimited play” format. This gives all players unlimited rounds to post a score that makes the cut into the Championship round on June 22nd. The system will automatically post your best score. Only the top 156 scores plus ties will qualify for the Championship Round. And on June 22nd, those qualifiers will compete in a single play 18-hole round on Bethpage Black, where they have just one chance to score the round of their life and become the 2009 Virtual U.S. Open Champion. There’s lots of prizes to be had, but only the Champion takes home the trophy and earns a trip to the 2010 U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach. For more information on the tournament click here.

Just received the following email from Bill Strayton that I thought you would all like to read.
I had another great time in a great setting with some really great people. I would like to thank everyone at WSOG for their hospitality and friendship shown to me and my family in all the event activities. We had a great time, more excitement than it seemed like we could handle at times and collected a bunch of memorable stories that will last a lifetime. I played with a lot of really nice people and as much as I hated losing on day 2, I could not have lost to a nicer guy than David Morton.
I need to correct a statement I made in an interview a month ago, when I was asked if I needed my son as my caddie. I said I usually did everything alone my entire life and while I may not need him there, it was more fun having him there. Well I was wrong. I needed him there. Without him, I would never have made it as far as I did. And then of course it was real fun too having him there. My other son, Dan, was a spectator and he thought he was having a heart attack a few times.
I also want to thank all my “fans”. I felt at times like everyone was rooting for me and I really appreciated that. I’m not exactly sure what I did in the past three years to collect so many supporters, but I love all the heartfelt encouragement. I’ve said many times, I play this event for the thrill and for the life stories I get to collect along the way. I got a lot of both this year and I can’t wait for 2010. Thanks again to the staff, the players and the sponsors. It was great; again!
Bill, we look forward to seeing you and your family again next year!

On the final day of the 2009 Full Tilt Poker.net World Series of Golf there were two very important people keeping track of the pot and purses. Scorer Scott Hinkley and Croupier Kevin Miles.
Scott and Kevin have been around the WSG format for a while now and were a big part of the final day going so smoothly. Thank you again to all the Scorer’s and Croupier’s that helped out this year.

Ladies and Gentlemen.
Jody Garaventa.
On the second playoff hole. Great tee shots from both Jody and Kevin, they landed dead center of the fairway and a ways out. Kevin hits his second shot exactly the same as he did on the first playoff hole. Just short and right of the green, but safe. In between two bunkers in a nice grass area for his approach shot. Jody skulled his second shot, and left some people wondering if the crown was going to be his. he made a fantastic third shot and landed it 12, maybe 15 feet from the tee. Drained the putt and won the 2009 Full Tilt Poker.net World Series of Golf.
Congratulations Jody, you played great!
